The Moon — Your Best First Target
The Moon is the single most impressive object you can view through a telescope. Even a small 70mm refractor reveals hundreds of craters, mountain ranges, valleys, and the dramatic terminator line where sunlight meets shadow.
Best time to observe: First and last quarter phases. The full Moon is actually too bright and lacks shadow contrast. The terminator line — the boundary between light and dark — creates dramatic shadows that reveal the most detail.

Planets — The Greatest Reward
Saturn

At higher magnification in a good telescope, the Cassini Division (a gap in the rings) becomes visible, along with the planet's subtle cloud bands.

Jupiter

Mars
Mars is a challenging target. It only appears large enough for surface detail near opposition (closest approach to Earth), which occurs roughly every two years. At opposition, a 150mm+ telescope may reveal polar ice caps and dark surface markings.

Star Clusters — Underrated Showpieces
Open clusters are among the most beautiful objects visible through a small telescope. The Pleiades, the Double Cluster in Perseus, and the Beehive Cluster in Cancer all look spectacular even in a 70mm telescope. Unlike galaxies or nebulae, clusters show well even from light-polluted UK suburbs.
